2003 REPORT

 [HOME] [SEARCH]

The 25th Annual Symposium was held in Orlando, Florida on November 5-8, 2003.  There were so many highlights that it will be hard to include them all in this report!

The Symposium began on Wednesday night with a reception followed by the annual Members meeting chaired by President-Elect Marian Leck.  We were saddened to hear that President Adele El-Ayoubi from Michigan (USA) was unable to attend - because of doctor's orders - she's expecting a new bundle of joy!

The slate of new officers was nominated and approved by the membership.  The formal reports were presented.  Then the fun began!  Rick Allen and Shawn from the Symposium Committee had a great mixer activity that resulted in fun and laughter!

Right: ISCPP Member Malcolm Cameron from South Carolina explains his team's creation during the mixer while Silva Kandiah from Singapore looks on.

On Thursday was the formal opening of the Symposium.  We were
honored to hear from Assistant Chief Constable Stephen White from the Northern Ireland Police Service.  Stephen is on loan in Iraq helping to organize the new police departments in the southern portion of that country (around Bazra).  It was fascinating to see a BBC documentary about his situation and to hear his challenges.

Keynote speaker Assistant Chief Constable Stephen White from the Police Service of Northern Ireland shares his firsthand insights into the situation in Iraq from a crime prevention and police point of view.

Stephen brought his aid in Iraq, Inspector Mark Miller from Debarton, Scotland.  Mark provided some unique insights into the situation.

There were more presentations of the high caliber we've come to expect at ISCPP Symposiums.  This included Jim Howell, CPS and Donna Weglewski, CPS from the Crime Prevention Association of Western Pennsylvania explaining how they funded and created their Mobile Training Unit.  It also included Vincent Bove presenting on facilities protection and Kathy Groenewold, CPS presenting on Crime Free Multi-Housing.

There were many more great sessions on Thursday.  That night, 30 people participated in Orlando Night that was held at City Walk at Universal Studios.  We ate dinner at the Motown Café and some people went to a comedy club, while others explored City Walk.  It was a fun evening!

On Friday we saw Peter Banks, Director of Training and Outreach for the National Center For Missing & Exploited Children.  He wanted the message spread by ISCPP members to tell parents to always carry a photo of their child with a description on the back.  If its ever needed in the case of a missing child, they will have the information handy to help police.  Sounds like an excellent tip!

The International Luncheon was filled with good food and informative speakers!  Tom Jensen presented a slide show on the latest in security for airports.  This was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Rick Hernandez with panelists Stephen White from Northern Ireland, Michael Miller from Scotland, Silva Kandiah from Singapore and Vincent Talucci.

Friday night was "Arizona Night."  This is traditionally held by the Symposium Committee for the following year.  It was supposed to be chaired by Bruce Wall and Mark Ruffennach from Scottsdale, but when we arrived we heard that Mark had been injured at a freak accident during dinner.  Later we saw "Little Billy" the clown who performed a show filled with magic with Bruce Wall and we quickly figured out what happened to Mark!  There was a great silent auction that raised money for the ISCPP and food and drinks for everyone!

Safety clown "Little Billy" from the S.M.I.L.E. Organization in Arizona is all smiles with Symposium Chair Cheryl Elliott from Atlanta, Georgia.

On Saturday we had two sessions and then a break so we could all get ready for the final Banquet.  The awards were presented at the Banquet.  To see this year's award recipients, go to the ISCPP AWARDS page of this website.

The Conference attendees at the Annual Banquet stop and take a picture to commemorate the event!

Thanks to Symposium Chair Cheryl Elliott, CPS who did a tremendous job as well as everyone on her committee - Rick Allen, Shawn, Bill Eustace, Silva Kandiah, Marian Leck, Scott Reed, and Bruce Wall!  Thanks to the speakers, exhibitors and the attendees from all over the world!

We're already looking forward to the 2004 Symposium in Scottsdale, Arizona!
