ISCPP Quilt Found A Home!
If you attended the 2001 ISCPP Symposium in Charlotte, North Carolina, then you had the opportunity to see the ISCPP Quilt! Many have heard about it, but few know the story behind it. We interviewed President Adele El-Ayoubi to give us scoop!
"After
September 11th, and prior to our conference, I was talking with (ISCPP
Executive Director at that time) Jim Howell and suggested that a quilt would
be a great way for us to raise money to send to the police department in NY
from their brothers and sisters in law enforcement world wide. I asked
if he know anyone who knew how to quilt and he said he would talk with his
sister Dahlene. Dahlene talked with her quilting group and they decided
to donate all the materials and their time for this worthwhile event. I
sent out an email to everyone that I had emails for in Law Enforcement and
explained to them what we were doing and asked for patches from their
departments to be part of this quilt. We had a wonderful response from
the law enforcement community. I had several conversation with Dahlene
on what I had in mind, and she did what she felt would work.
Never in our
wildest imaginations did we think this quilt would come out so beautiful.
We decided that rather than raffle it off to the highest bidder, it should be
shared with a National and International audience. We decided to first
contact the Ohio Senators to see if they would make a formal presentation in
the Hall of Congress in Washington D.C. and present the quilt to be hung
during the one year anniversary. Not for a lack of trying, but I never
received any response from either of the two senators that I contacted.
So then I tried a
different approach, my chief is a former Deputy Chief of NYPD, I explained to
him what I was trying to do, he made several phone calls to the NYPD Museum
and left messages, none of which have been returned, so he tried another way
and contact some of the deputy chief there, who referred him back to the
museum, but explained that they have been overwhelmed with donations and it
would take some time for them to get back."
It seems that the Quilt hasn't found a home when we first talked to Adele, but that changed! Lifetime Honorary Member Jim Howell, CPS arranged for the quilt to be donated to the New York Police Department to be displayed in their Police Academy. It was presented to a representative of the NYPD at a meeting of the Crime Prevention Association of Western Pennsylvania! Pictures of the event appeared in the 2nd Quarter 2003 issue of the Practitioner. (Posted 1/03 and 6/03)
